Nexium Bone Fracture Warnings by the FDA

Nexium is manufactured by AstraZeneca. It is one of the heartburn drugs called proton pump inhibitors that were recently part of an FDA warning. Use of these medications increase the risk of bone fractures and bone breaks, especially if taken over a long period of time. In May 2010, the FDA announced that the labels of Nexium and similar medications will be updated to warn of this fracture risk. In September of 2010, the label change was approved.

Nexium fractures can involve just about any bone in the body, but the most common have been identified as follows:

  • Femur fractures;
  • Rib fracture;
  • Ankle fracture;
  • Foot fracture;
  • Hip fracture;
  • Wrist fracture; and,
  • Spine fracture.

Nexium is advertised as the "little purple pill," and is one of the best selling drugs in the world. As a class, proton pump inhibitors generated sales of roughly $13.6 billion in 2009, according to publicly disclosed filings. And, as a class, proton pump inhibitors were the third best-selling group of prescription drugs in the U.S. market.

Due to postmarketing studies, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced on May 25, 2010, that the labeling for Nexium and other proton pump inhibitors would be modified to include information about their association with broken bones. The agency cited a number of studies that indicated patients older than 50 faced an increased risk of fractures when the drugs were used between one and twelve years.

Other proton pump inhibitor (heartburn medications) requiring the enhanced warning include:

  • Prilosec
  • Aciphex
  • Prevacid
  • Protonix
  • Vimovo
  • Zegerid

The FDA's warning was publicized and placed in the label available to doctors in their physician desk reference (PDR). The advisory stated that doctors and patients should weigh the known benefits against the potential risks of proton pump inhibitors when determining whether this class of heartburn medications is appropriate for treatment. And, of course, the warning suggested that consumers should discuss any concerns with their health care professional before use.
